Mary Cathryn has shared her Sun Plus Oxi laundry detergent review with me, which is one of the newer products from this company.
Mary Cathryn says:
I love this laundry detergent.
I use it at both of my parents' houses, and me and my mom use Sun pretty much because it's cheaper than all of the other laundry detergents at the grocery store.
I love the way it smells.
Taylor says:
Thanks for the quick review, and glad you're enjoying it.
Since this is a relatively new variety, I'd love to hear from others sharing their own experiences with it too.
Sun Plus Oxi Detergent Is My Choice For Low Cost Laundry Soap
by Millie
(Puerto Rico)
Millie also shared her review of this product with me.
Millie says:
I tried this detergent a while back because I kept getting complaints about discolored shirts and underwear from my significant other.
His parents tend to go for the Xtra brand detergent because it's cheap and what not, but I think that it tends to discolor color clothes if you don't dilute it in the water first, before putting in the clothes.
With the Sun Plus Oxi I have had no particular issues with any of the clothes and it smells pretty good, not too strong, but just strong enough to smell the nice clean scent.
I believe that the oxi in the detergent takes out regular stains out very well without having to add extra detergents into the washing machine.
The difference in price between the Sun Plus Oxi and the Xtra brand is merely cents, and I would choose the Sun brand over the Xtra brand any day of the week as my personal choice.
I have had no issue with allergies with this product thankfully. I do have a skin condition called Atopic Dermatitis which is also known as a type of Eczema, and my skin is quite sensitive to some products but thankfully this is not one of them.
You can get a nice sized bottle at Walmart for $5. I do have to say that I wish the Sun brand 250 oz dispenser bottle was easier to obtain here. I have never seen it at the nearest Walmart but it seems not many have it in stock around the area and some have a limited stock of it.
Taylor says:
Thanks so much for comparing two of the lower cost laundry detergents Millie, since I think that can be quite helpful for people.
You're definitely not the first person to mention to me the problems with discoloration that some people have experienced with Xtra. You can read some reviews saying something similar here.
I'm also glad you've found a low cost detergent that also doesn't aggravate your allergies! I've noticed some of the detergents which have an oxi additive (which is the addition of oxygen bleach sometimes cause allergic reactions for some people. If another reader has experienced such a reaction to this detergent, please tell me about it!
I'd love to hear from even more people who've used this brand of detergent, in this variety or another. You can share your Sun detergent review here, or read other reviews already submitted, including of other scents and varieties.
I Had An Allergic Reaction To This Detergent With Oxi Additive
by Joannie
Joannie says:
I would not recommend Sun Plus Oxi.
I have used Sun many time and all was well so I picked up this version with Oxi and had a serious allergic reaction to it a few days later. My son also had the same reaction.
I am on steroids in the form of pills and cream. I am not allergic to anything so I thought....
Be very careful with this detergent and please test it before you use it on your families clothes.
Taylor says:
Thanks so much for sharing your experience Joannie, although I'm sorry to hear it was so unpleasant.
I too have noticed that many of the detergents which have an Oxi additive cause many people to have an allergic reaction, similar to what you've described, and it is not brand specific. Instead, it seems to range across several brands.
My husband and I both broke out on our bellies, uppers arms, etc. and itched like crazy.
We could not figure out what it was. We had been using vinegar and Arm & Hammer soap, so we cut them out and washed clothes and bedding all over in just the Sun liquid, and we still had rashes.
Taylor says:
Thanks for sharing your experience Kat.
It very well could have been that you and your husband are allergic to this type of detergent, but I would say that the sequence of events you described makes me question whether this is the cause.
Because you were already broken out before you switched to this brand it may be that you haven't given your bodies enough time to heal from the allergies you were both experiencing to the previous detergent. It is always hard to tell though.
No matter what, I hope you find a product that works for both of you since laundry product allergies are NOT fun to experience.
I also am experiencing a wicked contact dermatitis from the SUN with Oxi Clean.
I have a severe rash, itch and now laryngitis related to the allergic response.
I'm on two topical creams and taking Benedryl around the clock.
I'm glad I figured out what it was.
My husband does the laundry but I inadvertently bought this version, not knowing. I had never used the one with Oxi in it.
Hubby said we just switched to the new bottle three days before my rash developed.
So I bought Sun sensitive skin and am rewashing all my clothes. Anybody need some detergent? lol
Taylor says:
Sorry to hear this happened to you Linda.
I don't know if by the sensitive skin formula you mean the free and clear version of this detergent, or a different formula, but the only review I've got of the free and clear version so far was someone complaining they got a rash from it.
If you're looking for a scent and dye free detergent, I've got a pretty comprehensive list of available hypoallergenic laundry detergents you might like to try (I've linked to all the reviews of them here on the site, where I've received them).
Has anyone else tried this version of this detergent? If so, you can share your review here or read others that have already been submitted for lots of scents and varieties.

Comments for I've Had An Allergy To Oxi Version Too
do you think this could be an allergic reaction to this detergent? by: Ashley C.
Not really a review more of a question. My three children and I moved in with a family friend so that I could care for his daughter while he works. The very first night we stayed in his home my oldest daughter Sheridon woke me up saying her eyes were swollen. I told her to go back to sleep, they were probably swollen because she had been crying earlier. When we woke for school the next morning I was horrified to see that my baby girl's eyes were swollen almost to the point of being swollen shut!! I have searched the house top to bottom and the only product here that we have never used before is sun with oxi-clean. Could this be caused by this detergent? She had no rash, no itching, no pain, nothing of that sort. So I guess my real question is can a detergent cause ONLY swollen eyes and nothing else?
response to Ashley re question about allergic reaction by: Taylor
Ashley, I'm not a doctor and nothing I say should be construed as medical advice. I have heard enough stories from readers who've had detergent allergies though that I know allergies can manifest in lots of different ways for different people. Here's my page with pictures of detergent allergies experienced by people that can let you see some of the variety of symptoms experienced. I hope your daughter feels better soon, and make sure you take her to a doctor if that is warranted. Such a severe reaction just cannot feel very good.
A good choice... by: Bob
I found Sun with Oxi a good choice in the lower cost detergent area. It's miles ahead of any XTRA product.
It has a very light scent and is colorless, both unusual characteristics for most liquid detergents. It cleans well in all temperatures, which is a real plus.
As with any lower cost detergent, you have to use more detergent than is recommended on the label.
I've found no allergic reactions from using Sun Oxi. My wife does have sensitive skin, so we are always on guard when we use new products.
