Kirkland Environmentally Friendly Laundry Detergent (From Costco) Review

by Crystal
(Illinois)

Here's a review of Kirkland Environmentally Friendly laundry detergent.

Crystal says:

I have 4 kids who are heavily involved with sports. I do 4-5 loads of laundry a day and love the Kirkland brand detergent from Costco (I use the HE variety). It's inexpensive and works great!

Taylor says:

Thanks Crystal for sharing your review.

It is always great to find a product that works well, and is inexpensive.

Has anyone else tried this brand of detergent? If so, I would love to hear your thoughts about it in the comments. Have you had similar results to Crystal?

In addition, I tried to research the detergent more, since it does claim to be environmentally friendly, but couldn't find out much about this claim. Does anyone have any thoughts or information about this aspect of the product?

This Eco Friendly Laundry Soap Left Residue In My Washer Tub

by SR101 Reader

SR101 Reader says:

I just purchased and used Kirkland Environmentally Responsible Laundry Detergent. It left a greasy residue ring around my washer tub.

This does not make me feel confident in using this product because if there is residue around my washer tub then there is residue in the clothes and bedding as well.

I will go back to Arm & Hammer detergent which does not leave any residue in my washer.

Taylor says:

Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

I am wondering, has anyone else experienced this problem when using this detergent? I'd love to hear your experience good or bad. You can share your laundry detergent review here for this or any other brand, telling me what you like, or don't, about it and why.

Makes My Fabrics Smell - Switching Back To Old Brand

by K Brierley
(BC, Canada)

This detergent makes all my polyester blends smell like musty bread and wet dog (combined). It is literally making me sick.

It may be partly a reaction the detergent is having with the fabric (yikes!) in combo with the soft water here, in any case, I'm definitely switching back to Ecos' brand "magnolia and lily" scented detergent.

I don't know why we ever switched, that stuff is great!

My Free & Clear Costco Detergent Has Been Replaced With This "Green" Product

by Bonnir
(California)

Bonnir shared her experience with the environmentally friendly version of Costco's detergent.

Bonnir says:

I've been buying and loving Kirkland Free and Clear laundry detergent for many years.

Last time I went to purchase it, at my local Torrance CA Costco no longer carried it...they have changed to a "green" Kirkland product which now has a strong scent similar to Tide.

I can't handle the smell, my clothes no longer come out soft and detergent-free, and I have developed a rash.

I don't see how this can be more environmentally friendly that the Free and Clear.

I'm taking it back...do not purchase this thinking it's just new packaging and name!

Taylor says:

Sorry to hear about your allergic reaction to laundry detergent Bonnir.

If they no longer carry the free and clear version of the Costco laundry detergent in your Costco, I would suggest trying to find a new hypoallergenic laundry detergent for you and your family. You can check out my article from the link provided, which gives reviews of various brands from other readers so you can find one that will work well for your whole family.

Kirkland Environmentally Friendly Laundry Detergent Is The Best

by Jenn B
(Henderson, NV)

Jenn has shared what she believes is the best laundry detergent.

Jenn says:

I switched to this detergent about 3 years ago & haven't looked back.

I was hesitant at first because most of the Eco-friendly detergents I have tried in the past have not cleaned very well. I have 3 Boys so I need a detergent that really gets the grime out & this does not disappoint!

I love the very light scent because I easily get headaches from soaps that are too strongly scented.

I also love the price, $13 for 120 loads is hard to find & when they put out their coupon for $2.50 off, that makes it quite the steal!

Taylor says:

Thanks Jenn for sharing your review of this Kirkland brand laundry soap.

In the previous review from Crystal, I said I wasn't able to find out much information about the ingredients of this detergent, to evaluate its claims of being environmentally friendly.

Since then I've learned more about it. Actually, Jenn provided me a link to a page about this detergent, which lead me to find this Costco Connection Magazine article from August 2008, which discusses this laundry supply, and tells more about its eco-friendly characteristics. It says:
These new products feature biodegradable cleaning agents and plant-based formulas; contain no phosphates, dyes, optical brighteners or bleaches; are safe for septic systems; and are not animal tested.
That helps answer some questions about whether it is really a green cleaning supply.

The cost of this product is much lower than many other eco-friendly alternatives, which is good since it can be expensive if you want to buy something instead of making your own homemade laundry detergent. I'm definitely going to be checking this Kirkland brand out now that I've gotten several positive reviews of it.

Makes a different for those with Celiac disease
by: Anonymous

I also have Celiac Disease. When I use soaps and laundry detergents that contain gluten I break out in hives. It is awful!!!

Response re not being gluten free
by: Taylor

Dear Anonymous, thanks for submitting your comment to me here on the site. As you may know, I am in no way associated with Kirkland brand, nor with Costco, so I am not in a position to respond to you regarding what is, or is not in, the ingredient list of Kirland Environmentally Friendly laundry detergent.

I would be interested, however, to know why this is an issue. (I'm not saying its not, I am very interested in this issue.) I have been under the impression that it was important to know if something is gluten free only if it is something you ingest, and so I've never considered this issue as it relates to this, or any other laundry detergent or cleaning product, since obviously you don't eat these things.

If anyone has any information about this issue I'd love to hear from you to learn more about this issue. Thanks in advance!

I am Celiac and your soap has something in it that is not gluten free.

Gluten in detergents
by: Judy

I have problems with gluten in detergents too. It triggers psoriasis reactions that are so hard to overcome.

this caused me to have an allergic reaction
by: Veganmom

I am covered in hives and rash from Kirkland brand laundry detergent, namely Kirkland Environmentally Responsible Ultra Clean premium laundry detergent. I am taking back to store.

I have had to see a dermatologist for rash and $80.00 in prescription drugs to get rid of rash and itching.

nonstop 24 hour itching!!!
by: Mindy

I have gone to 4 specialists: dermatologists and allergists. No one could find the cause of my hives (the worst the doctors have EVeR seen)!!!

Look on Amazon! Countless similar reviews on my "natural" laundry detergent.

"It started one day with a few bumps that looked like mosquito bites and then turned into the worst hives ever! This is the first time I have ever had a reaction to a laundry detergent and I will never use it again. Be careful with this one!"

"broke out in hives all over his body with unbearable 24 hour itching. After several appointments with the dermatologist and various treatments with creams, shots, and oral medications he found no relief. We finally decided to look up complaints about this detergent and found he was not alone."

Well, me too! Horrible stuff!

Peels paint
by: Danny

Has anyone had a problem with it peeling and bubbling the paint on your washer? I turned this on the side as I have all the large he style laundry detergents to dispense. I just noticed a large spill had penetrated the paint on my new Samsung Washer. Everywhere it has ran and sat the paint is peeling and bubbling like a "Paint Remover". It makes me sick! What is in this stuff? I had been using the Fragrance Free but could not get the last two times. When I tried to wipe it up all the paint came off with it!

Broke son out
by: Anonymous

Worked great. Smells great. However my son suffered from a severe allergic reaction from this product. Chest pain, cough, stomach cramping, glandular swelling and whole body rash. Had to rewash all clothing and linen 3 times to stop the rash from reoccurring.

Horrible detergent!!!!
by: Anonymous

I bought the environmentally friendly laundry detergent from Costco. First, it doesn't make clothes smell fresh and they don't get clean. Second, my husband has broken out in hives all over his body and is extremely uncomfortable and itchy. This prompted us to look up reviews on the product. We quickly found out what the culprit is! So many people have spent hundreds of dollars at the dr. because of this laundry detergent!!! Luckily, I knew that the only new thing my husband was exposed to was the detergent. Well, to make a long story short, I have rewashed his clothes, bedding three times in a known safe detergent and the environmentally friendly detergent will not wash out of the clothes! 4 weeks later and he is still breaking out in hives!!!! We are downright angry because he will probably have to go to dr. For creams, pills and a steroid shot before this is all over or buy all new clothing! This crap may be environmentally friendly but not human friendly!!!!! Please beware of this detergent ! More people who use it seem to be affected than not! I'm disappointed because I am a big fan of Kirkland brands but the ef detergent is a total nightmare!!!

developed a rash
by: Anonymous

I have never had any allergic reactions but I did with this detergent. I developed a rash on my upper body that was extremely uncomfortable. It wasn't until I did some research and consulted with my doctor that he identified it has probably my detergent since he had seen this before.

Leaves an odor
by: Deborah

Switched to a "green" detergent because my other was leaving a white residue on my dark clothes but at least they didn’t smell. There is such a strange odor on the towels. Just hate drying my face because I can’t stand the smell. Tried using less, then added vinegar to rinse water, nothing worked. I recently went back to my old brand and the odor is gone! Will never buy Costco detergent again and the rest is going in the trash!

disappointed
by: Anonymous

This detergent is supposed to be environmentally friendly, but I’m frustrated that some of my clothes come out of the wash with bleach-like stains. Other loads, like kitchen towels, aren’t clean enough.
