How To Remove Urine From Mattress - Video Tips

Below is a video demonstrating how to remove urine from mattress tips.

The suggestions in the video include creating a solution of 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water and spraying this into the urine stained and soaked area.

I would suggest also adding a bit of dishwashing liquid into the solution, using the same cleaning solution that I suggested for upholstery in my article about urine stain removal.

Then, blot the cleaning solution into the stained area and repeat three to four times.

Finally, let the mattress sit and air dry for a few hours (I personally think 24 hours is even better).

The reason to let it dry thoroughly is because even if it feels dry on the surface it probably isn't dry yet down inside the mattress.

You don't want mildew and mold to develop in the mattress from the dampness.

Lastly, she makes a good suggestion which is to prevent urine from soaking into the mattress, such as when you are potty training your child, by putting a waterproof mattress cover on your mattress.

Then you won't have to remove urine from your mattress in the first place.

I have done this with each of my children and those waterproof mattress covers are wonderful.

I remember a long time ago the waterproof covers felt rubbery and
weren't comfortable because you got all hot and sweaty laying on it.

However, they are so much better now and are soft and fabric like and my kids don't seem to be bothered by them at all.

If you have young children or another person in your home that has problems with accidentally urinating in the bed you should definitely try them out. (See below for some recommended waterproof mattress covers.)

Recommended Waterproof Mattress Covers

Here are some waterproof mattress covers in various sizes you can use on your mattresses. I recommend getting at least two because if one gets peed on you want to be able to quickly change it, and put a new one on while you have time to wash the other one, especially if you have the problem in the middle of the night.

Mattress stains
by: Anonymous

I have urine stains on my mattress which are about 5 years old from when my granddaughter was a toddler. I did clean it up straight away but there are old rings of stain still there now. Is it possible to remove these stains? The mattress has a memory foam top which is part of the whole thing and cannot be removed. It was a very expensive mattress and I'd love to get it back to being stain free.

Love plastic mattress covers
by: Wanda

I love using plastic mattress covers like you suggest on all of my mattresses, but especially on ones where my littles sleep.

It comes in really handy when they are potty training, and don't make it to the potty in time at night, and also if they get sick at night, before I can get to them.
