Remove Chewing Gum With Mounting Putty - It Worked For Me
by Jean
(Illinois)
Jean has shared her tips for how to remove chewing gum from clothing, wood, and car upholstery, sharing what worked for her.
Jean says:
I'm not sure this would work for everything, but recently, after going to a movie theater, I found out I had gum on the back of my pants.
I had already sat in a wooden rocking chair and a plastic-covered folding chair at home, and also in my fabric-upholstered car seat driving home.
I removed the gum from the plastic chair with no problem using a paper towel and water, but it was more difficult to remove from the other items.
My husband tried putting ice on the car seat without luck. Then I thought about using blue mounting putty to pull up the gum, just as when you remove the mounting putty itself.
He tried this on the car seat and the wooden rocking chair with great results, then we used it on the back of my pants, also with great results.
There was some sort of discoloration on the car seat where the gum had been, but it was hardly visible.
I think this could be used on any hard surface and many fabric surfaces. I'm not sure how well it would work on a carpet or hair, but I think it would help in many cases.
Taylor says:
Wow Jean, thanks for this great tip about how to remove chewing gum from many different surfaces. I just hate it when people just throw their gum out, left carelessly in the street, or in a movie theater. It can make a big mess really quickly.
For the stain left on the car upholstery, perhaps you should try an
auto upholstery cleaner to see if you can get rid of that, but sometimes if something isn't very noticeable it is best just to leave well enough alone.
I don't know that I would have thought of using mounting putty, but once you said it, it makes a lot of sense. It is basically a do it yourself
chewing gum remover. I would love to hear from other readers, sharing if this tip has worked for them, and on what surfaces it was successful in removing the gum.
In addition, I would love to hear even more tips for removing chewing gum from all types of surfaces. You can
