Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Review {Taylor's Experience}

I recently tried Affresh dishwasher cleaner tablets to clean my dishwasher and wanted to share my experience with you.

First, as many of you who follow the site know I have been looking for a good product to clean my dishwasher for some time now.

As you may recall I got pretty fed up with the types of cleaners that were supposed to automatically dispense at the right time during the cycle, when the dishwasher's heat and hot water melted the wax plug. It never seemed to work right and the cleaner didn't even dispense many times.

Therefore, my criteria for choosing some more products to review included no more wax plugs!

That's why this product looked so very promising to me. It comes in tablet form (see picture to the right), so I had no fear that it wouldn't dispense properly.

The instructions say this product is safe to use with your dishes, although I did not try that. Instead, I ran my machine empty (and I'll explain more about why below).

Being able to use this product and wash dishes at the same time is handy though, since I use my dishwasher so much getting it completely empty so I can run a cycle only with the cleaning product is not always an easy thing to do. I know this feature would mean I would be much more likely to use it regularly, as it suggests.

The product is designed to "remove filming and spotting" on your dishware and on the inside of the dishwasher itself that comes from the new no-phosphate dishwasher detergents.

I'm sure I have some of that white filmy residue in my
dishwasher. As I explained in another review I noticed a lot of that residue building up when I tried the Target Up & Up powder detergent, but my main problem is really hard water build up and scale.

Because my dishwasher really needs help I followed the instructions for "significant buildup" which said to use the Affresh tablets without dishware, and to add two tablets -- one to the main detergent tray and one to the bottom of the dishwasher. (If you're using for maintenance cleaning only, and using while washing dishes you should place the tablet in the bottom of the dishwasher and regular detergent in the detergent tray.)

After running the dishwasher on a normal cycle as instructed I did think I saw less filmy build up but it did little to nothing for all the hard water and lime scale that was building up in my appliance.

Therefore, I thought this product worked well for the purpose it was designed, but it wasn't necessarily ideal for the purpose for which I needed it the most. Instead, I found that Lemi Shine Machine Cleaner worked best for my dishwasher, to remove the hard water build up. (Click the link to read my review of that product.)

Bottom line -- I will use the last of my three tablets of this product to clean my dishwasher sometime in the future when I think more soap and detergent film have built up in my machine, but I won't necessarily use this product regularly or monthly, as it suggests, since it doesn't do much, if anything, for hard water build up.

Left White Film On Dishes & Inside Dishwasher

by Marsha

I have a new dishwasher, and cleaning it for the first time for the white hard water accumulation on the inside.

It said I could use with dishes in, so I did in order to save both energy and water.

Put the tablet in the bottom, set it on start and was looking forward to a clean dishwasher and dishes.

Woe is me, everything is now covered in a white film that I will have to clean with vinegar to get clean.

I do have a water softener for my hard water.

This is the worst result possible and I will just use vinegar from now on.

Affresh Dishwasher and Garbage Disposal Cleaner Review

by Dara
(Georgia)

Dara has shared her Affresh dishwasher and garbage disposal cleaner review with me.

Please note that since the time this review was created the company has changed the product and now advertises it only as a product to clean your dishwasher, and no longer says it can clean disposers as well.

I don't know if it reformulated the product at that time or not (although my review above is of the most current formula for sure.)

Dara says:

I tried Affresh's garbage disposal and dishwasher cleaner for the first time about six months ago. From that time on I've been hooked.

This product really helps to get rid of those lingering odors in the disposal. I also feel like it makes my dishwasher work more effectively.

The scent is nice, clean and not too strong. The product is very easy to use. Just put one tablet into the disposal and run some hot water, or put a tablet in the dishwasher without any other dishes in there.

I notice an instant difference every time I use Affresh. My disposal and kitchen smell clean and fresh. By cleaning my dishwasher with this product I have noticed that there is a reduction in the amount of mineral spots (water spots) that I see on my glasses and silverware, which is an extra bonus.

Six tablets of Affresh cost me less than ten bucks, which is a great deal considering the package will last me several months. I usually use one tablet in my disposal every couple of weeks, and one in my dishwasher about once a month. I will continue to buy this product and recommend it to friends.

Cheaper fix

Vinegar, just plain, ordinary vinegar, often does as good a job and for less.

Yes, in some situations, depending on both how dirty your dishwasher is, and also what is making it dirty vinegar can work well.

Here's my article on how to use vinegar to clean your dishwasher.

Further, here's several home remedies for a smelly garbage disposal, and one of the listed ones is vinegar, with fuller instructions and tips for using it in this way.

worse product ever
by: Marc Miller

The worst product I have used. It has an awful chemical smell in the vane of carpet cleaner and mothballs. I had to shut the kitchen doors as the smell permeated the kitchen. My kids literally left the house for 3 hours. After rinsing the washer 3 times after use to eliminate the odor, it still remained and my dishes were inflicted with the smell as well. Worst product ever!!!

by: Kay

I have used these tablets several times now and have never noticed an unpleasant smell. As for Marc's problem, I wonder if he has other chemicals in his water that might be interacting with Affresh. I use them now primarily for a film that seems to be on dishes after being washed. They are clean but seem to have a dried film on them that my Bosch never left before when they always came out clean, dry and "slick". I too, have very hard water and always keep the dishwasher's rinse aid dispenser well supplied. Vinegar has not seemed to help with either problem.

Hard water
by: Anonymous

most washing machine and other appliance problems start from hard water, there are devices currently on the market to solve this problem, filters, soft water machines and electronic devices. A good old bowl of vinegar in the top shelf every so often and soft water will provide you with long lasting positive results without all the chemical cleaners and smells that come with them.

Stained my dishwasher - STAY AWAY
by: Anonymous

I used this product once and it ruined the bottom of my dishwasher. STAY AWAY. I have tried cleaning the stain but it wont come out. Looks like it actually removed the stainless steel.

4 out of 5 stars
by: Ardith

I use Affresh dishwasher cleaner as a maintenance cleaner with my detergent when I am washing up our compost buckets as a cleaner because Affresh really cleans buckets so there is no mold or odor afterwards. I use other cleaner as my once a month cleaning. I’d probably give it a 4 star out of 5.

Dishwasher "dirty"
by: Catherine

My dishwasher is used often but never full, only 2 of us, I use Fairy tablet, loose on floor as it will not fit in box, Whirlpool machine, but plastic pale grey parts very soon look and are "grubby" and need wiping after every use. I tried Affresh cleaner but my dishwasher LOOKS very clean bur still needs wiping, also in the rubber seals. Kitchen roll comes away black every time. Do other people have to clean and check after every use? I do not put any pots in, only crockery, glasses and cutlery. I wash the filter after every use too.
